I live in the 4.8 square mile US exclave, Point Roberts, WA, where I am surrounded by one side Canada and three sides ocean. Daily walks take me by the shore where I dream of what might be living beneath the surface of that big blue. With an active imagination I conjure up all sorts of creatures and spin tales inside my head. We have our own border crossing and it’s been closed since 31 March 2020. Being locked in for a year has given me ample time for these fantastical stories to evolve. While watching fishing boats haul out their nets, knowing Giant Pacific Octopus live in our waters, I fantasize Mermaids and graceful swallows (the sailor’s friend) might be the links to both worlds. Swallows lead you home but who is pulling whom? I only know the Mermaid sees and understands all, above and below. The tale comes to life in: I Have No Fear of Depths.
